This website is dedicated to photography, natural history, ecological literacy and, of course, gardening — using “life in the garden” as a working metaphor. I use the garden metaphor with some trepidation because gardening is often understood as the conquest and subjugation of nature, and that is NOT my perspective. At the same time I think the garden metaphor provides opportunities for rich and nuanced reflections. At least that is my hope. We shall see.
Photography posts offer reflections and technical suggestions for creatively engaging with the natural world. Ecological literacy and natural history posts feature local ecosystems and celebrate the plants and animals of the Pacific Northwest. Gardening posts provide practical tips and a vision for producing food, while supporting pollinators and other beneficial insects. Gardening with native (indigenous) plants will be the focus of many posts. Making peace with the garden (Feb 7 2020) is maybe a good place to start and should give you a sense of where I am going with all this.

The creation of a pollinator garden is an intentional act of hospitality. The vast majority of six-legged garden visitors are either benign or are providing significant benefits. I am trying to change my default setting to hospitality, suspending my suspicions and extending a welcome to the backyard “bugs.” (1180 wds)
